Safety Officer

The Safety Officer promotes and monitors workplace and job site activities to ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and standards relating to Legacy Construction operations, personnel, and job sites. The Safety Officer position coordinates and collaborates with all team members, subcontractors, vendors, and consultants and reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Ideal candidates will have two years related safety experience, one year construction experience, and hold a health and safety certification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Collaborate with management, departments, and personnel to develop, prepare, implement, and promote safety policies, procedures, and programs.

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules.

  • Ensures completion of required recordkeeping and reporting.

  • Provide safety-related guidance, technical, and administrative support to staff where needed.

  • Stops operations and activities that could harm employees, equipment, or others.

  • Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health issues.

  • Coordinate and facilitate employee training on applicable safety standards.

  • Review safety training policies and procedures and recommend revisions, improvements, and updates.

  • Conducts safety inspections and audits to assess employee and job site compliance with safety regulations.

  • Ensures proper safety supplies and equipment are in place.

  • Provide guidance and perform equipment safety inspections, recommends replacements when necessary.

  • Drafts and implements internal and external safety standards and policies.

  • Review accidents and incidents reported by employees, subcontractors, and other parties.

  • Collaborate with outside safety consultants on related topics and identify timing and placement of consultant inspections.

  • Solicit, collect, and track all subcontractor project-level required compliances.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED ARE:

  • Extensive knowledge of safety policies and procedures and applicable OSHA standards for all construction trades.

  • Understanding of construction means and methods.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to conduct and facilitate training.

  • Ability to collaborate and work well with team members to further safety-related goals.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

  • Ability to travel to and from job sites to conduct safety inspections.

  • Ability to physically drive a vehicle.

  • May require performing general physical activities that require the use of arms and legs such as lifting, walking, and stooping for handling of safety supplies.

  • Health and safety certification required.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or related field preferred.
